A mural created by a Healthcare Assistant working on the frontline in the fight against coronavirus, has been unveiled at South Tyneside District Hospital today. Evelyn Frame, 62, a Health Care Assistant at South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust painted the ‘Tree of Life’ as a tribute to all of the frontline staff who worked in the Intensive Therapy Unit (ITU) at South Tyneside District Hospital, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Toby’s bracelets bring smiles to children’s faces
Enterprising Toby Medhurst may be only eight-years-old but already he’s showing he could have a bright future in business. Starting with only £5, he has raised a fantastic £425 for the children’s wards at Sunderland Royal Hospital by making and selling ‘rainbow wish’ bracelets. The kind-hearted, little lad even made some of the bracelets specially for the nurses on the ward where he and his brother Sam were treated for breathing difficulties when they were younger to say thank you for the amazing work they do.
Healthcare staff and families get on their bikes to raise money for COVID-19 research
Healthcare workers and their families took part in a cycle ride between South Tyneside and Sunderland to raise funds for research into the effects of COVID-19 on head and neck cancer patients. South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust’s head and neck cancer team organised the fun outing and consultants, specialist nurses and speech and language therapists were among those who took part.
Coronavirus survivor’s family thanks hospital staff who saved his life
The family of a coronavirus patient described by one doctor as ‘lucky to be alive’ has said a heartfelt ‘thank you’ to staff for the care and treatment he received at South Tyneside District Hospital. Abul Azad is now recovering at home after spending 56 days in intensive care.

Hospital consultants appointed to drive forward Trust’s research and innovation ambitions
Two hospital consultants have been appointed to lead South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust in its continuing commitment to research and innovation. Mrs Deepali Varma, Consultant Ophthalmologist and Retinal Specialist at Sunderland Eye Infirmary, will be the new Director of Research, and Neonatal Consultant Dr Imran Ahmed has been named as Director of Innovation.
