Great grandad, 99, gifts artwork to support the hospital that saved him – twice

A remarkable 99-year-old Great Grandad from Houghton-le-Spring is donating his artwork to raise funds for the hospital that saved his life… twice. David Hughes MBE - a former Army Sergeant and Co-op chief executive - is gifting a collection of his paintings to support STS Charity, the dedicated charity of South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust. Money raised from the artwork will benefit the Stroke Unit and Vision Appeal – areas close to David’s heart due to the care he has received.

Eye hospital’s longest serving research patient thanked for his dedication

Charles Smith has taken part in a series of trials around age-related macular degeneration (AMD) during the last 15 years through Sunderland Eye Infirmary. He has also helped shape its service by offering his views.

Ceremony marks one year on since building work started on region’s new Eye Hospital

A ceremony hit the heights to mark one year since work began on a landmark building which will see the region’s only standalone eye hospital make the move to Sunderland city centre. South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust will transfer all its clinical services from Sunderland Eye Infirmary to the new site off Plater Way, with the new location part of the Riverside Sunderland regeneration project.
