Professor Mark Shipley

Professor Shipley is a Consultant in Respiratory and General Internal Medicine.

A Consultant in Respiratory and General Internal Medicine looks after adults with lung problems and general medical illnesses. 

Professor Shipley has been a consultant in Respiratory Medicine since 2011.

His has special interests in: 

  • COPD - a long-term lung condition that makes breathing hard
  • Lung Cancer
  • Care for people with serious lung disease that is not cancer, helping them reduce their symptoms and improve their quality of life

He is very interested in medical education. His work includes:

  • Designing good learning placements for students
  • Checking the quality of teaching
  • Using artificial intelligence (AI) to support medical education

Since January 2023, Professor Shipley has been the Undergraduate Programme Lead and Deputy Head of the School of Medicine at the University of Sunderland. In this role, he is responsible for making sure medical students receive high‑quality teaching throughout the whole course.

He is also a GMC Educational Associate and Team Leader, which means I help support and guide doctors who teach and train students.
