How to get there

The new Eye Hospital is accessible from major roads from the north, south and west of the region.

When approaching Sunderland, follow signs to City Centre. Once in Sunderland city centre, follow signs to Eye Hospital.

There will be a patient car park outside the new Eye Hospital. This will have 90 spaces. There will be Blue Badge spaces and electric car charging points. 

Close by is the Riverside Multi-Storey car park. This has 650 spaces. 100 of those spaces will be for Eye Hospital staff. It will also have electric charging points. 

St Mary’s car park is also nearby. Electric cars can be charged here too.  

There are lots of bus stops close to the hospital. They are used by Arriva, Go North East and Stagecoach buses.

These include: 

• St Mary’s Boulevard. This is a 2-minute walk. 
• St Mary’s Boulevard. This is a 1-minute walk. 
• Fawcett Street. This is an 8-minute walk. 
• Vine Place/Holmeside. This is an 8-minute walk. 
• John Street. This is a 10-minute walk. 
• Park Lane. This is a 10-minute walk.

There are four Metro stops close to the hospital. These are: 

• Sunderland. This is an 8-minute walk. 
• St Peter’s. This is 8-minute walk over the new Keel Crossing bridge. 
• Park Lane. This is a 10-minute walk. 
• University. This is a 13-minute walk. 

Sunderland station is an 8-minute walk away. 

Trains operating here include: 

• Northern Trains to places including Newcastle, Middlesbrough and Hexham
• Grand Central Trains to places including Hartlepool, Northallerton, York and London

If you’re travelling by train to Newcastle you can get a Metro to Sunderland. This will take 29 minutes. 

The hospital will be connected to the rest of the Riverside Sunderland development by lots of new walkways. There will be a park outside to enjoy.

The new Keel Crossing bridge will make it easier to the north side of the river. 

Walking to the city centre will take 5 minutes. Here you’ll be able to visit shops, restaurants and entertainment venues.
