Children’s Emergency Department (ED)

What is Children’s ED?

We look after babies, children and young people, up to the age of 16, if they have a serious health emergency.

We are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at Sunderland Royal Hospital.

We treat the most serious problems. These are things that could be life threatening.

Children come to us via their GP, NHS 111 and 999 ambulance. Children who come to the ED might.

  • be able to go home the same day.
  • stay in our Children's Short Stay Assessment Unit (CSSAU).
  • go to one of our Children's wards.

Some children might need to go to the Great North Children’s Hospital for specialist or intensive care treatment.

Where can I find Children’s ED?

The Children's Emergency Department (ED) is at Sunderland Royal Hospital.

Use Entrance 2 on Kayll Road. It is to the right of the Main Entrance and to the left of the Adult Emergency Department.
