Our Acute Medicine service gives quick checks and early care to adults who come to hospital feeling suddenly unwell.
We work in the Emergency Assessment Unit (EAU) and Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC).
We work closely with the Emergency Department and specialist teams. This helps make sure patients get safe, high‑quality care as soon as they arrive. Many people can be treated and go home the same day.
Our team:
- Finds out what is wrong as soon as possible
- Helps patients feel stable and safe
- Gives fast treatment and care
We treat problems like:
- Trouble breathing
- Chest pain
- Serious infections
- Falls or collapses
- Flare‑ups of long‑term illnesses
The Acute Medicine team includes:
- Consultants (doctors) who are experts in Acute Medicine
- Other doctors who are training or working in this area
- Advanced Clinical Practitioners and Nurse Practitioners
- Nurses and healthcare support workers
- Therapists, pharmacists and other healthcare staff
Our team is trained to care for people who are very ill or unwell. We act quickly and make fast decisions. We use special tools, including bedside ultrasound, and give urgent treatments when needed.
