In this service, we look after people who have problems with their blood. This might be a blood cancer. Or it might be another blood condition (see below) or a problem with how the blood clots.

Where will my treatment take place?

We see people with a range of conditions that can affect their blood. We will see you in our outpatient clinics. This is where we will organise tests and scans and talk to you to help us understand what is wrong. We will also see you for follow up care and to monitor your condition if we think we need to.

If you need a blood transfusion or chemotherapy treatment for a blood cancer, we will see you in one of our day units. These are on both main hospital sites and at Washington Primary Care Centre.

Patients who are in hospital will usually stay on Ward B28. This is in Sunderland. This is where we look after patients at high risk of infection due to their condition. You may also stay in other parts of our hospitals too.

Who will look after me?

A specialist team will look after you. This includes:

  • Consultants
  • Haematology Nurse Specialists
  • Other medical and nursing staff.

Together, we will review your symptoms and agree a plan to look after you. As part of your ongoing care, we will monitor you with tests and scans. We may see you in person at a clinic or via a telephone or video appointment.
