Filipino nurses celebrate 25 years of service

South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust is marking International Nurses Day by celebrating a special milestone. More than 40 Filipino nurses are reaching 25 years of service with the Trust.

The nurses came to the United Kingdom in 2001 as part of an overseas recruitment programme. Since then, they have built strong and lasting careers. Many now work in senior roles, such as ward managers, deputy managers, charge nurses, educators and clinical specialists.

Starting a new life in a different country was not easy. The nurses had to learn a new health system and adjust to a new culture. Everyday language could be hard at times, especially with local accents and sayings. Being away from family and getting used to the weather also brought challenges.

Despite this, their focus on patients never changed. They have always given kind, safe and high-quality care. Over time, the Trust has become more than a workplace. For many, it feels like home.

Filipino values, such as respect, teamwork and community, are still strong. These values can be seen in the way staff support each other and work together across teams.

Food also plays an important role in their culture. During celebrations, colleagues often share dishes like spring rolls and pancit. These meals help bring people together and remind them of home.

Michael Junia, Vascular Staff Nurse, said:

“When we first arrived, everything felt new and strange, and it was not always easy. We had to adjust quickly, but we helped each other all the way. Over time, the Trust has become a place where we feel we belong, and the North East is now a place many of us are proud to call home. I feel very proud of what we have achieved together.”

Mayflor Bernal, Lead Nurse for Patient Safety at South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust, added:

“I am very proud of our Filipino nurses and all they have given over the past 25 years. Their care, resilience and strength have made a real difference to our patients and staff. This milestone shows their hard work and commitment.”

As part of International Nurses Day, the Trust would like to thank its Filipino nurses for their service. Their work has made a real difference across services.

This milestone also shows the value of recruiting staff from around the world. It highlights how people can grow, succeed and make a lasting impact in the NHS.
