South Tyneside celebrated outstanding achievements by staff across the organisation at its Reward & Recognition Awards ceremony. Nearly 200 people gathered at the Clarion Hotel, Boldon, for the event. The awards were open to all staff, recognising the many varied roles that play a vital part in the running of the Trust, providing hospital services in South Tyneside and community health services in South Tyneside, Sunderland and Gateshead.

Vital changes to stroke services saving lives across South Tyneside and Sunderland

More patients across South Tyneside and Sunderland are now getting access to high quality stroke care and life saving treatment thanks to major changes made as part of Phase One of the Path to Excellence programme. Latest data from the Sentinel Stroke National Audit Programme (SSNAP)* shows the quality of stroke services has risen significantly over the past two years with more patients now receiving timely care, delivered by specialists, in a dedicated acute stroke unit.

Charlotte Rooney was nominated by staff on the Glaucoma and Mayling Diagnostic Units, where she has worked since January 2018. She began as an apprentice and recently became a fully qualified healthcare assistant

Green light for South Tyneside and Sunderland merger

The formal merger of South Tyneside NHS Foundation Trust and City Hospitals Sunderland NHS Foundation has moved one step closer following positive feedback from regulators NHS Improvement and a recommendation from each individual Trust Board to proceed with the transaction. This means work can progress to complete the process by the end of March with the new organisation, ‘South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust’, on track to come into operation on 1 April 2019.

​Programme lead announced for new School of Medicine

One of the region’s leading consultants in elderly medicine and a much-loved mentor to dozens of junior doctors for almost two decades has taken up a key role in the University of Sunderland’s new School of Medicine. Dr Andy Davies who currently heads up the Falls and Syncope Service and is a consultant in elderly medicine at Sunderland Royal Hospital, has been appointed Undergraduate Programme Lead by the University.

Sunderland Eye Infirmary has been honoured for the contribution of its Ophthalmology research team to improving the health and treatment options available to patients worldwide. The Trust was selected by global biopharmaceutical solutions organisation Syneos Health as a recipient of its Site Appreciation Award, which recognises the value of clinical research sites as partners in the clinical research process.

The pair work at South Tyneside District Hospital which, along with Sunderland Royal Hospital is promoting Healthcare Science Week 2019 between March 8th-17th to celebrate and raise awareness of the many careers in Healthcare Science and inspire the scientific workforce of the future.

NHS staff survey results for 2018 show positive improvements in South Tyneside and Sunderland

Results from the 2018 NHS Staff Survey show continued positive improvements in staff feedback at both South Tyneside NHS Foundation Trust and City Hospitals Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust. The two organisations, which are soon set to become South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust*, had some of the highest response rates in the country with over 3,500 staff across South Tyneside (1,435) and Sunderland (2,241) completing the survey.
