We provide a free hospital radio service in both South Tyneside and Sunderland hospitals which are both ran by our wonderful volunteers.

The aim of the service is to provide relief from any anxieties our patients may feel during their hospital stay, reduce boredom and be our patient’s personal bedside friend.

South Tyneside District Hospital’s radio station is broadcasted 24 hours a day on Channel 1 of WiFi Spark (formerly Hospedia) and provides music, information and local news to our patients and colleagues in the hospital. The service is free and requests can be made by dialling *800 (free phone) from the WiFi Spark telephone.

Sunderland Royal Hospital’s radio station broadcasts a wide range of topics including popular patient music request show ‘Ward Call,’ useful advice, health promotion and support organisation information and of course the whole of every Sunderland A.F.C. home game! Patients in Sunderland Royal can listen for free to Radio Sunderland on Channel 1 of your bedside console. Everyone else can listen online!

Anyone aged 16 or over can be a volunteer at Radio Sunderland - there is no upper limit and no experience is required as full training is given. You can find out more about the radio station, including how to volunteer here: http://radiosunderland.co.uk/
