Travel by Rail

Northern Trains link Newcastle and Sunderland city centres with bus routes across Tyne and Wear. Visit the NEXUS website where you will find a live travel map, timetables and a ticket finder.

Travel by Bicycle

Bikes are a convenient and quick way to get around Tyne & Wear. There are quality bike lockers, cycle racks and pods at Metro and bus stations to use, making it an easy way to combine travel to get to your destination.

Concessionary Travel Schemes

The Concessionary Travel Schemes provide reduced price travel for Tyne and Wear residents. The schemes are for disabled residents, those aged over 66 and under 16. 

Concessionary Travel Pass

A concessionary travel pass allows reduced price travel across Tyne and Wear.

A person becomes eligible for a Concessionary Travel Pass on their 66th birthday.

You may also be eligible for a Concessionary Travel Pass if you have a disability. There is an eligibility criteria and you will need to have an assessment.

If you are disabled and you attend college. Or, you are in paid employment for at least 15 hours a week, you can apply for an all-day Concessionary Travel Pass.

Concessionary Travel Scheme for Tyne and Wear residents aged over 66

With a Tyne and Wear Concessionary Travel Pass you can travel:

Free on buses in Tyne and Wear from 9.30am Monday to Friday. All day at weekends and on public holidays.

Free on local buses in England, between 9.30am-11.00pm Monday to Friday. All day at weekends and on public holidays.

Free before 9.30am to get to/from a hospital appointment. You need to show your hospital appointment card or letter with your Concessionary Travel Pass or Metro Gold Card when requested.

On the Shields Ferry for 60 pence from 9.30am Monday to Friday. All day at weekends and on public holidays.

On Northern Rail services for 50 pence between Newcastle and Metro Centre/Blaydon, from 9.30am Monday to Friday. All day at weekends and on public holidays.

Unlimited travel on Metro and Northern Rail services between Newcastle and Sunderland when you buy a Metro Gold Card.

Unlimited travel on the Shields Ferry when you buy a Metro Gold Card.

Concessionary Travel Scheme for Tyne and Wear residents aged under 16

With an Under 16 Pop Card you can travel:

On a single bus journey for 60 pence.

On all types of public transport for £1.10 all day.

Children under five travel free on all public transport in Tyne and Wear, when accompanied by an adult.

Up to three children under eleven can travel free on Metro with a fare paying adult.

Metro Gold Card

If you have a Concessionary Travel Pass you can buy a Metro Gold Card. The Metro Gold Card entitles you to a year’s travel on Metro, Shields Ferry and Northern Rail Services, between Newcastle and Sunderland. It costs £12 a year if you live in Tyne and Wear.

You can travel free with a Metro Gold Card before 9.30am to get to/from a hospital appointment. You will need to show your hospital appointment card or letter with your Metro Gold Card when requested.

Companion Card

A companion card allows you take someone with you on your journey free of charge. When you travel on buses in Tyne and Wear, County Durham, Northumberland and Darlington. The companion card is for Tyne & Wear residents who are in receipt of certain allowances.

Taxi Card

The Taxi card scheme helps people with mobility difficulties to travel independently. It allows travel with a Nexus approved Taxi Company at a discounted price.

A membership card is credited with a set amount of money each year. The card is then used to help pay towards a taxi journey. You have to apply to join the scheme and meet the eligibility criteria. There are two opportunities to apply to join the scheme each year.

Residents in South Tyneside are issued with a book of vouchers instead of a Taxi card. Membership cards must be shown to the taxi driver on each journey.

Bridge Card

If you have difficulty using public transport due to your age, illness or disability, you can carry a bridge card.

Just show your card to transport staff and they will know that you need a little extra help on your journey.

You may need help to get to your bus seat. Or help to read a bus timetable.

You do not have to register or apply for this scheme, just carry a card with you.
