Kind-hearted Sunderland schoolchildren are determined to let hardworking local hospital workers know they are being thought about at Christmas.

About 350 pupils, aged from four to 11, at St Benet’s RC Primary School, in Fulwell, have been making Christmas cards to be given to nurses and doctors who will be on duty at Sunderland Royal Hospital over the festive period.

Teacher Tom Biggins said: “It is important for our school to do something for the local community at Christmas time and this is such a fantastic project. The older children made cards last year and they were thrilled when they saw messages on our Twitter page from grateful hospital staff who received them. This time, the whole school is involved so we can send even more. Each child writes a personal message in their card saying thank you for the work of our local healthcare staff throughout the year and, particularly, at Christmas.”

Andrea Hetherington, Head of Corporate Affairs at South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust, said: “While most people are enjoying precious time with their families and friends this Christmas, many of our staff will be hard at work doing their usual fantastic job, ensuring that vital services are maintained and that our patients receive seamless care. It is really touching to know that the children of St Benet’s RC Primary School are thinking of them.

“We give a present to each patient who is in hospital on Christmas morning and we’re delighted that, at the same time, we will be able to give our staff at Sunderland Royal Hospital one of the personal cards made by the pupils to show how much they are appreciated.”
