On Sunday 7 September at 3pm, the UK government will test the Emergency Alerts system.

The test will be sent to all compatible 4G and 5G mobile phones and tablets across the UK.

When it happens, a mobile phone or tablet will vibrate. It will also make a loud siren-like sound. This will happen even if it is set on silent.

A message will appear on the screen confirming that this is a test.

The sound and vibration will last for about 10 seconds. You will not need to take any further action.

Depending on your phone’s features, the alert will work with screen magnification. It may read the message out for you, having also overridden volume settings.

The unique noise emitted by the phone should be heard by those who use a hearing aid.

People can opt out of the Emergency Alerts. This includes the national test. The Government has advised people should keep them switched on. This is for their own safety.

About Emergency Alerts

Emergency Alerts will warn people via a mobile or tablet. This is if there is a life-threatening emergency nearby. Only the Government and the emergency services can send them.

There are simple and effective steps we can all take. This will make us more prepared for an emergency.

The Emergency Alerts system is an important tool for reaching the public in emergency situations. However, if you need to turn off these alerts, including the test, visit this page: Step by step instructions

You’ll be able to check that an alert is genuine via this page: Government alerts

Emergency Alerts will be just one of the ways the government communicates with the public about emergency situations.

So if you don’t have a mobile phone, don’t worry – you’ll still be made aware through the media and local emergency services.

Worried about alerts?

Domestic Abuse services have expressed concerns. This is because of the risk to those who may be keeping their phones hidden from an abuser.

Because of this, our Domestic Abuse Health Advocate Team has asked us to share this with colleagues

Refuge has produced videos on how to turn alerts off on iPhones.
