A dedicated Heart Failure Specialist Nurse has been recognised with a national award celebrating exceptional care for people living with heart failure.
Laurie McIntyre from South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust was selected for the Pumping Marvellous Foundation’s “You’re Simply Marvellous” award following a heartfelt nomination directly from one of her patients and his family.
Laurie received the surprise award during a team meeting, where she was congratulated by Chief Executive of the Trust Ken Bremner MBE and Dr Mickey Jachuck, Consultant Cardiologist and Clinical Director of Cardiothoracic Medicine at STSFT.

The national award recognises health care professionals across the country who have made an exceptional difference to the lives of people living with heart failure. Only three of these awards have been presented nationally in the last year.
Laurie shared:
“It was such a lovely surprise, and incredibly thoughtful of the patient and his wife despite everything they’ve faced over the past year to take the time to nominate me with such kind words. It is a privilege to be part of patients’ and families’ journeys during such difficult times and very rewarding to be appreciated for just doing my job.
“I’m very proud to be part of the Heart Failure Team at South Tyneside and Sunderland. They are a fantastic, supportive team and every one of them deserves recognition.”
Dr Mickey Jachuck, Consultant Cardiologist and Clinical Director of Cardiothoracic Medicine, shared:
“I am delighted to see Laurie’s dedication recognised with such a prestigious award. Since joining our team, she has been an invaluable asset and seeing this level of praise come directly from her patients is a powerful testament to her impact.
“This recognition highlights the vital work Laurie and our Heart Failure team perform daily. We remain deeply grateful to the Pumping Marvellous Foundation for their partnership as we work together to raise awareness and improve the lives of those living with heart failure."
Laurie was nominated by heart failure patient Gareth and his wife Nichola, who shared the following nomination:
“Big shout out to an Extraordinary Heart Failure Nurse, Laurie McIntyre. My husband had been unwell since the beginning of 2025. When he was finally diagnosed with heart failure back in May, our whole world was turned upside down. He didn’t show the typical heart failure signs, which led to a long and upsetting waiting game.
“It was an enormous shock for our family, especially for his children. It’s been a massive emotional journey and an incredibly tough time, both physically and mentally, for all of us. But through it all, one person has truly been our anchor: Laurie, Gareth’s Heart Failure Nurse.
“She has been nothing short of phenomenal. She takes the time to explain every detail with patience and clarity, no matter how many questions we have. When we’ve felt lost or frightened, Laurie has been that calm, reassuring presence who helps us find hope again. Her compassion goes far beyond medical care. Laurie has supported our whole family, making sure I understand Gareth’s medications, connecting us with the right support services and reminding us that we’re not in this alone. She treats her patients as people, with heart, dignity and humanity.
“Thanks to her dedication, Gareth feels truly cared for and understood. Laurie has given us strength during the darkest times and has reminded us that even small steps forward are still progress. We will forever be grateful for her. Laurie doesn’t just do her job, she changes lives. She is the heart of Gareth’s recovery and the perfect example of what compassionate, patient-centred nursing looks like.”
Nick Hartshorne‑Evans, CEO and Founder of the Pumping Marvellous Foundation, added:
“To hear such incredible feedback on the difference Laurie has made to her patient’s Heart Failure journey is fantastic. Together we can BEAT Heart Failure.”
