A Sunderland cancer nurse has received national recognition after being named the winner of the Prostate Cancer UK and British Association of Urological Nurses (BAUN) People’s Choice Award.

Nicola Elves, Urology Cancer Specialist Nurse at South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust (STSFT), was chosen for the prestigious award following a heartfelt nomination from a patient she has supported through diagnosis, treatment and ongoing care.

The People’s Choice Award celebrates nurses across the UK who go above and beyond in their role to make an extraordinary difference to the lives of people affected by prostate cancer. Nicola’s dedication, compassion and commitment to personalised care stood out among nominations from across the country.

Her patient’s nomination highlighted the impact she has had:

“Nicola has supported me through every step from initial diagnosis, active monitoring and Radiotherapy a year later. She helps me maintain a positive outlook by providing lots of useful information. She also runs a 5K Your Way exercise program alongside Park Run each month, which me and my wife attend, and Nicola always checks in with her to see if she has any questions or concerns.

“I can't recommend Nicola highly enough. She treats you as an individual and is super friendly whilst maintaining a professional approach.”

Nicola shared the following on winning the award:

"I was genuinely shocked when I first learned I had been nominated for this award—and then to be told I had actually won was absolutely overwhelming. I could hardly believe it. What makes this award so special is knowing that someone cared enough to take the time to submit a nomination.

“To me, I’m simply doing the job I love, so this recognition means the world. I’m extremely grateful and will treasure this achievement, as it feels like a once-in-a-career moment.

As part of the award, Nicola attended the BAUN Annual Conference - an experience she described as inspiring and invaluable. She shared:

“Attending the BAUN conference was an incredible experience - one I would not have had without winning this award. The programme was outstanding, and I learned so much that I’ve been able to share with colleagues and use to improve the care I provide to patients. I’m deeply thankful to Prostate Cancer UK for running an award that gives patients the opportunity to show their appreciation for the nurses who care for them. It’s a wonderful initiative that makes a real difference.”

Naomi Line, Education Manager at Prostate Cancer UK, said:

“Prostate Cancer UK is proud to work with the British Association of Urological Nurses (BAUN) to deliver the People’s Choice Award. Nominated by patients, this unique award celebrates nurses who go above and beyond for people affected by prostate cancer.

"Nurses do incredible work and are too often the unsung heroes of prostate cancer care. This award gives patients the chance to say a heartfelt thank you.

"To all nurses, thank you for your dedication and for the positive impact you continue to make.”
