Professor Colin Rees has become President of the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG).
He will be in the role for the next two years.
The BSG is one of the world’s leading gastroenterology organisations. It was set up in 1937.
It has around 4,500 members. They include doctors, nurses and allied health professionals.
Prof Rees is a Consultant Gastroenterologist. He works in our Endoscopy Unit at South Tyneside District Hospital.
He is heavily involved in its research work.
He is also a Professor of Gastroenterology with Newcastle University.
He said:
"I am delighted to be taking over the presidency of the British Society of Gastroenterology.
"BSG seeks to support its members in delivering the very best gastroenterology and hepatology care, education and training.
"I look forward to leading the society in delivering excellence in the field as it has for nearly 90 years.
"The BSG has always had significant input from the North East although I believe I am the first clinician to be president from this region.
"BSG has close links to our university and hospitals and I hope to continue to develop these as I carry out this significant ambassadorial role for the university."
BSG produces high quality guidelines covering clinical practice used throughout the world.
It delivers, along with BMJ partner, Gut journal along with Frontline Gastroenterology and BMJ Open Gastroenterology.
BSG has an active educational programme. It runs an annual meeting which this year had record registrations of 2,700 delegates.
It plays a major role in training of gastroenterologists. It has an active international programme.
