As 2026 began, the Maternity team at Sunderland Royal Hospital was on hand throughout the night to safely deliver the first babies of the New Year.

The first baby to be born at Sunderland Royal Hospital in 2026 was Caleb Stewart, who was delivered at 02:35am on New Year’s Day.

Caleb was welcomed by proud parents Mark and Danielle Stewart, along with big sister Eden Stewart.

Among the special New Year arrivals was Remi Alice Edge, born on 1 January and weighing 5lbs 11oz.

Remi is welcomed by parents Jade Metcalfe and Seamus Edge, and joins siblings Reanna, Mason, Daegan, Nola, Niamh and Ethan.

The family shared a heartfelt message: “Our superstar countdown baby, in loving memory of Alice Haikney, late grandmother of Jade and a very special woman. We could not be more thankful to all the staff at Sunderland Hospital – two certain mentions to Hannah and Paul.”
