Security Officer Mark Hardy is proving that no challenge is too big when it comes to supporting those affected by cancer.

He took on not one, but two ultra-distance events in just over a week. Mark is raising vital funds for the STS Charity Rise Above Cancer Fund. A cause close to his heart.

After 24 years of service in the Armed Forces, Mark continues to thrive on physical challenges. He now works as a Security Officer at Choice, a subsidiary of South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust.

His first challenge saw him complete the demanding WAUT Wales Ultra 50-mile trail around the beautiful Welsh Llyn Peninsula Coast Line on 4th – 5th July.

Mark shared:

“I wanted to push myself with two challenges across two weekends, knowing I was doing it for a cause that’s close to our hearts.

“My wife has dedicated her career to cancer patients and is now a Matron and was previously a Clinical Cancer Educator at STSFT. A close family member is also currently having treatment for cancer and using these services, so it really means the world to us.”

He originally planned to follow this with the Snowdon 24 hour Challenge which is an attempt to climb Wales’ highest peak as many times as possible within a 24-hour window.

Unfortunately, the event was called off early due to the severe heatwave in the UK, with safety concerns cancelling the event and Mark after just one climb.

Despite the setback, Mark’s determination to raise funds and awareness for Rise Above Cancer remains stronger than ever.

Rise Above Cancer plays a vital role in supporting the STSFT Cancer Information and Support Service, providing funds so it can go the extra mile for our patients. The service offers practical and emotional support, plus complementary therapies for both patients and carers. Alongside providing resources to support children who have a family member of friend diagnosed with cancer.

The service also provides advice on where and how to obtain legal advice, a bandana service, access to benefits advice and signposting to trusted local and national resources. At its heart, Rise Above Cancer is built on compassion. It’s there to listen and support people when they need it most.

Mark has already raised an incredible £1,500 in 2023. With £745 collected this year and his JustGiving page still open. He’s now setting his sights on the Great North Run in September.

Nichola Taylor, Head of Corporate Affairs and Charity at STSFT, added:

“We’re so proud of Mark’s dedication. Fundraisers like him help ensure we can offer vital services that truly make a difference for cancer patients and their families across South Tyneside and Sunderland.”
