It is with immense sadness and a very heavy heart that we must confirm the loss of a dear colleague and member of our NHS family.

Fiona Anderson, a community staff nurse within our Sunderland West team at Grindon Lane Primary Care Centre, sadly lost her life on Sunday 26th April, after testing positive for COVID-19.

Fiona devoted her life to helping others and joined the Trust in 2007, working as a staff nurse at Sunderland Royal Hospital and South Tyneside District Hospital before joining the community as a staff nurse in 2019.

We are in touch with Fiona’s family to provide all the support we can during this time and share our deepest condolences for their devastating loss.

Fiona was a passionate and highly committed nurse who cared for thousands of patients in both Sunderland and South Tyneside, many of whom will be deeply saddened with the news of her passing.

Today is a very sad day for the NHS in South Tyneside and Sunderland and an incredibly difficult time for Fiona’s family, friends and of course her STSFT family and wider NHS colleagues.

On behalf of the family, Fiona’s sister Sarah Anderson said: "We are incredibly proud of Fiona, she died doing what she loved, working for the NHS and caring for those in need. Always in our hearts and never forgotten."

Paying tribute to Fiona and on behalf of her community nursing colleagues, manager Kath Henderson said: “We are all absolutely devastated that we have lost our valued friend and colleague Fiona.  There are no words that can describe the loss we are all feeling but we take comfort in knowing just how much Fiona loved her job and how incredibly proud she was to be part of the community team and the important work we do caring for patients.  She brought pride and passion to her work every single day and made such an incredible difference in the lives of so many people in South Tyneside and Sunderland.  We will miss you dearly Fiona and will think of you always.”

This is an extremely emotional and difficult time for Fiona’s family and for all of those who knew and loved Fiona.  We ask that you respect their privacy as we grieve for Fiona and try to come to terms with this unimaginable loss.
