Online workshops have been set up for parents and carers of young children with social communication challenges.

Those on the course will learn about these skills in young children and how they develop.

They will look at how to help a child if they are at very early or pre-verbal stage of development, so this is before they begin to use words.

It will teach strategies that work well to support social communication skills at home.

The course is written and delivered by experienced speech and language therapists and advisors. They are based with the children’s communication charity, Speech and Language UK.

They will also share resources which can be accessed. The workshop is also a space to connect with other parents, share experiences, and ask questions.

Two sessions are available:

  • South Tyneside - Thursday, January 29, from 9.30am to 11.30am
  • Sunderland - Friday, February 6, 9.30am to 11.30am

Both workshops share the same content.

Each will have a local Family Hub representative on hand to answer area-specific questions.

Anyone with a child of five and over will not find the content relevant. They may fine it more useful to contact Speech and Language UK. Its website can be found here: speechandlanguage.org.uk

The workshop will be held on Zoom. Anyone who has not used Zoom before will find it easy to use. They will be sent a link before the session.
