What we offer at our Consultant-led Maternity Unit

If you choose or need to give birth in our Consultant-Led Maternity Unit in Sunderland, you will still receive your antenatal care locally. This will be with your midwife at your GP surgery and with consultants who visit our Midwifery-Led Birthing Centre at South Tyneside District Hospital.


Our Consultant-Led Maternity Unit at Sunderland Royal Hospital may be recommended to you if your pregnancy is classed as high risk. In our Consultant Led Unit we have a team of midwives, doctors, anaesthetists, neonatal staff and maternity support workers. We have a team of midwives who offer one to one care in labour are experienced in offering both low risk and high risk labour care.
 

Environment

At our Consultant Led Maternity Unit offers high and low risk care and has a relaxing birthing pool. Your birth preferences will be taken into account and the environment tailored to your care needs.

  • Birthing balls and floor mats
  • Movable beds to facilitate active labour
  • 1 Maternity theatre with recovery facilities
  • On site level 3 Neonatal unit

Important Information

Due to ongoing building works with Antenatal and Postnatal environments, we are currently using a bay on our Gynaecology ward opposite the maternity department. This ward is used for low risk post natal women prior to discharge.

Birthing Partners

Your partner, friend or relative can support you during labour, but don’t worry if you don’t have a partner – your midwife will give you all the support you need. We encourage birthing partners to bring their own provisions such as snacks. We have on site vending machines and our midwives will be more than happy to provide refreshments when in labour, they can leave the Maternity Department to get refreshments.
