The majority of kidney patients will need some treatment to prevent their anaemia becoming a problem and reducing their quality of life.

The anaemia service works with all the kidney doctors in all the different kidney clinics to support your treatment mainly using two types of medication.

  • Iron –this can be tablets in the early stages of kidney disease or as a drip in our out-patient renal ambulatory care which will take about 1 hour to complete.
  • An injection under the skin of a hormone to make more red cells that carry oxygen around our bodies. We will teach you how do this at home.

We will be your contact for organising these treatments, adjusting the doses, arranging a supply of the injections and blood tests when required.

Our aim is to support your anaemia treatment as part of your journey with kidney disease for as long as you need it.
