The Renal Psychology Service offers support for people who are under the care of the Renal Department. We know that living with a kidney condition can be challenging and it can be hard to manage sometimes.
We see people for a number of reasons, including anxiety, low mood, adjustment, relationship issues, anger, and sleep difficulties. These are just a few examples of some of the more common reasons for referral.
We offer face-to-face, video, and telephone appointments. Face-to-face appointments are usually held at Chester Lodge at Sunderland Royal Hospital.
We only accept referrals if this is something that you want. We understand that you may feel unsure about seeing a psychologist and we offer an assessment appointment where we can meet and talk about the support we can offer. The assessment appointment will give you a chance to decide whether therapy is right for you.
The number of sessions you will be offered will depend on your needs. However, the service is not set-up for long term treatment of mental health conditions as other services already provide this.
Referrals to psychology can be made by your Renal Consultant. If you think you would like to access psychology, please discuss this with your doctor who can tell you more about the service and make a referral.
