All eyes on Sunderland for the future of eye care in the region
Bright colours filled the streets of Sunderland on Saturday as a wave of participants joined the “All Eyes on You Walk,” a fundraiser led by STS Charity in support of eye care in the region. Held on Saturday 11th October, the walk brought together 35 patients, NHS staff, Trust leaders and members of the public for a symbolic journey from Sunderland Eye Infirmary to the future site of the city's new Eye Hospital.

Region’s new Eye Hospital in full sight as scaffolding comes down
With just nine months to go until the region’s new Eye Hospital opens its doors in Sunderland, patients can now get the first glimpse of where they will be coming for their specialist eye treatment from next summer. All scaffolding has now been removed from the exterior of the building, revealing in full the striking architecture of the new Eye Hospital in Sunderland city centre. It marks a major milestone in the project’s progress.

Sunderland’s Neonatal Unit gains top ‘Baby Friendly Award’
A Neonatal Unit which provides intensive care for babies from across the North East and North Cumbria has been awarded a prestigious ‘Baby Friendly Award’. The team at Sunderland Royal Hospital looks after hundreds of premature babies every year from all parts of the region. It is now the latest UK health care facility to gain official accreditation as part of UNICEF’s Baby Friendly Initiative. The Baby Friendly Initiative is a global programme. It aims to transform healthcare for babies, their mothers and families. It is part of a wider global partnership between UNICEF and the World Health Organization (WHO).
