The Community Ready and Reablement Unit (CRRU) is a 14-bed, nurse-led unit. It provides short-term care for patients who no longer need hospital care but cannot go home yet.
Why we may transfer you to the CRRU unit
If you (or a loved one) are ready to leave hospital but need extra support in place before you go home, this is where you will stay.
The CRRU is a warm and welcoming environment and has a ‘home from home’ feel. It's somewhere you can relax and continue to recover while you wait to go home.
Why it’s important for you to move from the ward
We must make sure there are enough beds available for people who need to be in hospital.
If you stay for longer than you need to, this puts pressure on the hospital. It also means patients who do need to be in hospital must wait longer for a bed.
What care you will I receive
Our nurses will work with you to plan and assess your care needs. There is 24-hour care, 7 days a week. Community GPs visit 3 days per week.
The team works with lots of different health care staff to support you. This includes healthcare assistants, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and pharmacists. Together, they help you to be more active, independent, and confident.
There are lots of activities to help make your life easier at home.
Where the unit is
It is on Ward 19, next to the Discharge Lounge at South Tyneside District Hospital. The Discharge Lounge has a car park at the entrance (Denes Wing). This makes it easier for your loved ones to collect you when you are ready to leave.
Visiting
We encourage visits as we know it is good for you and your loved ones to see each other. You can have visitors at any time between 9am and 9pm, 7 days a week.
Costs
The unit is free of charge.
