Our Anaesthetics department provides invaluable clinical support to the surgical specialities.
Patients undergo various forms of anaesthesia that keeps them comfortable and safe during surgery. Your anaesthetist will also ensure that your pain relief continues after the surgery, even when you have left the theatre area.
Before undergoing planned surgery, you will be required to attend the PREP clinic, for Preoperative Risk Evaluation and Preparation. This is a nurse-led service with clinical advice provided by anaesthetic consultants.
As well as working in the operating theatres, our Anaesthetic teams also:
- Look after our critically ill patients in both our Critical Care Units at Sunderland and South Tyneside
- Provide outreach service to at-risk patients in the wards
- Offer 24 hours cover for the maternity unit for women requiring pain relief with epidural during labour or requiring caesarean section
- Provide Hickman’s line service for patients requiring chemotherapy or artificial feeding for nutritional support
- Help with pain management for admitted patients. For those in chronic pain, outpatient clinics are situated around the region to bring patient care closer to their homes in the community.
