South Tyneside and Sunderland Foundation Trust provideshaemodialysis at Sunderland Royal Hospital. Patients come come three times a week for their haemodialysis treatment.

Haemodialysis is a treatment where blood is filtered of waste, toxins and extra fluid through an artificial kidney.

Patients attend haemodialysis treatment usually three times a week at the Renal Unit.

Sunderland Royal Hospital In-Centre Haemodialysis (MRU) provides:

  • Treatments delivered by trained Renal Nurses and Dialysis Assistants
  • Training and supervision for any patient that wants to learn how to give their own dialysis treatment and plan dialysis at home.
  • A place for interaction and socialization amongst dialysis patients
  • The option to keep your home and kidney treatment separate if this is important to you.

When you arrive at the Unit, we first ask you to wash your hands. We will then check your weight and show you to your dialysis chair or bed.
We will check your vital signs before connecting you to the dialysis machine. This is to ensure you are well enough to start treatment.

Each session usually takes 4 hours but may vary depending on your consultant's prescription.

After the treatment, you will be weight again before going home. This is so we can calculate how much fluid has been removed from your body and plan your next dialysis.

We sometime check blood tests from the dialysis machine and will do this at least every month. Patients can travel to dialysis sessions by their own means or we canarrange patient transport. However, this will usually take a little longer.
