Our team is the backbone of our organisation and ensures that we provide safe, high quality patient care and excellent patient experience. Working with us you will be fully supported, but encouraged to develop your skills and knowledge with the help of our experienced and friendly team.

Our recent merger with South Tyneside NHS Foundation Trust has allowed us to develop and strengthen medical training across all specialties and training grades. Educational and training opportunities are available across Sunderland and South Tyneside giving you the chance to be innovative and help us improve the quality of patient care for generations to come.

In addition, we have our Path to Excellence transformation programme which is exploring new and innovative ways of delivering high quality, joined up, sustainable care that will benefit local people both now and in the future. It really is an exciting time to train with us.

Why work for STSFT

  • We have a long standing ‘train the trainers’ programme, which is mapped to the new GMC requirement for trainers. We were also involved in the successful bid to develop the new medical school at the University of Sunderland.
  • In the recent GMC National Trainee Survey the North East and Cumbria Trusts were number one in 16 out of 18 indicators for postgraduate medical training and have been number one for overall satisfaction for six out of the last seven years. We are one of the top performing trusts, particularly when it comes to our induction process, handover and supportive environment
  • We are also recognised as one of the most digitally advanced Trusts in the country. In fact we are one of only 16 Trusts nationally chosen to be a Digital Global Exemplar.
  • We offer simulation training across all disciplines. For example there are active regular programmes in Paediatrics, Emergency Medicine, Intensive Care and Obstetrics. We provide high fidelity simulation training for our undergraduates.  We also provide in-house faculty development training for colleagues who are keen to become simulation trainers themselves. Apart from the in-house simulation equipment we have access to University of Sunderland’s wonderful simulation facility and immersive suite.
  • We have a dedicated research and innovation team who support and develop ideas. The work of our team is renowned regionally, nationally and internationally and many of our colleagues are involved in wider projects and sit on national and international boards and councils
  • We hold the gold award from the Ministry of Defence for the work we do to support colleagues who are involved, or want to be involved with the armed forces. We have around 15 reservists who work across the Trust and we very much support the work that they do.
  • We offer our FP Doctors a unique and valuable opportunity to undertake clinical programmes in Walawalkar Hospital in Dervan, on India’s west coast, as part of our partnership with SVJC charitable trust. The main purpose of the trips to Walawalkar Hospital is to educate, perform and assist surgical procedures as well as check medical equipment to improve patient safety in the hospital. Funds raised for SVJC Charitable Trust support some of the air travel costs and shipments of donated equipment.
