We provide the full range of sexual infection screening and treat all sexually transmitted infections, free of charge.

At Sunderland Royal Hospital we see anyone:

  • Wanting a sexual health check-up, with or without symptoms (we offer the choice of not being examined)
  • With a suspected or known sexual infection
  • With any genital problems including discharge, lumps, rashes
  • Wanting a blood test for HIV or Syphilis
  • With a diagnosis of HIV for long-term treatment and management
  • Who has been or think they have been sexually assaulted
  • Wanting advice on safer sex, sexual risk taking, infections, sexuality, gender issues
  • Requiring Hepatitis B vaccination due to sexual risk
  • Requiring PEPSE (Post Exposure Prophylaxis following Sexual Exposure)
  • Help for people who have been sexually assaulted
  • Referral to a specialist
  • Psychosexual Counselling

Partner Notification

We can also help you contact partners if you have been diagnosed with a sexually transmitted infection.


Complex GUM

This service is for patients who have chronic recurrent genital problems. We see and manage individuals of all ages with non-sexual infection problems such as:

  • Genital skin problems (itching, soreness, rashes and lumps)
  • Genital Pain
  • Unexplained vaginal discharge or thrush
  • Problems following gender reassignment surgery

You can also see our Pregnancy Options Advisors, who will provide you with the necessary help and support during your pregnancy decision making process.


Termination of Pregnancy Referral

If you are attending our Contraceptive Services to request a termination, you can be referred to the Termination of Pregnancy Assessment Clinic directly from Contraceptive Services.

Young Person’s Contraceptive Nurse

The Young Person's Contraceptive Nurse works closely with young people to provide contraceptive and sexual health advice and support. Links with schools and colleges to provide sexual health education and advice.


Contraceptive Service

The following contraceptive methods are provided:

  • Contraceptive pills, patches, injections and implants.
  • IUD and IUS (Coils)
  • Emergency Contraception (Morning After Pill).
  • Condoms (Including C-Card)
  • Cervical cytology

Complex Contraception

This service is for women with a range of problems including hormonal, medical gynecology and complex contraceptive issues.

Gateshead and South Tyneside

Our Sexual Health Services  at Gateshead and South Tyneside provide a full range of services including:

  • Testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
  • Advice and information about sexual health
  • Free condom scheme
  • Contraception – including Emergency Contraception
  • Pregnancy Testing
  • HIV Testing – including rapid result (30 min) tests and counselling and PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) – short term medication that can help prevent people from developing HIV if they've been exposed to it.
  • Hepatitis B vaccination

Request a Home STI Testing Pack

Free Online Home STI Testing Service

In response to COVID-19 and social distancing guidance:

Gateshead & South Tyneside Sexual Health service have launched a new online home STI Testing service to increase wider community testing access.

If you are aged 16 or over and live in Gateshead or South Tyneside you can order a testing kit direct to your door.

The home testing kit offers screening for infections such as HIV, Syphilis, Chlamydia & Gonorrhoea.  

Testing kits are discretely packaged in a plain envelope and will be posted through your letter box

Results will be sent to you by text within 10 working days.

If you have an infection you will be offered an appointment at either the Gateshead or South Tyneside sexual health clinic which will also include treatment.

Did you know that many people with an STI will have no symptoms at all? That's why it's important to be regularly tested if you have had unprotected sex or have recently changed partners.
